Transponder Keys, Problems

With any technology, problems can and do come up. This applies to even smaller items such as keys. We are referring, in this scenario, to transponder keys! Transponder keys have a chip inside, and the key itself is designed to make things more convenient and secure with your car, truck or SUV. We know that when problems come up, they can be quite frustrating to deal with, especially if they prevent you from getting to where you need to go. We are going to discuss some of the common issues with transponder keys.

But let’s start with what they are used for. This is a key, as previously mentioned, with a chip which is connected to your vehicle. The chip, when in close proximity to your vehicle, sends a signal to the ignition. This signal is important because it communicates to the car that the owner is trying to utilize it. The ignition can turn thanks to this key. It serves as an anti-theft measure. As you can see, there are multiple reasons to have a transponder key, and this is why when you buy a new car through the dealership, you often receive a set of these keys.

Transponder keys come in a set in most cases, which is a good thing because at any time you might need to access the spare. You might want two keys in case one goes missing. Or maybe it’s because you aren’t the only person who drives your vehicle, because a trusted family member also drives it. The point is that this type of key is important to have. But like with anything, problems can come up. So, what happens when you have transponder key problems? What are you supposed to do if both keys are missing? What if the key isn’t working? We are going to go over potential issues – see if any of these apply to you!

The Key is Lost

Clearly, in terms of keys, having a spare is important when it comes to your transponder key. If you end up misplacing one key, you will need the other one. Let’s say your key somehow went missing and you noticed when you were looking for it just now so you could drive to the grocery store. You retrace your steps but can’t find it anywhere. You check the kitchen counter, and it is not there even though that is normally where you leave it. You check your purse or pockets, and again it is nowhere to be found. What do you do? The good news is, there are a couple of options. You can have an auto locksmith program a transponder key or you could even go to your dealership. You might find a locksmith more convenient and affordable, though.

Ignition Is Not Turning

If you try to turn the key in the ignition but it will not turn, the problem could point to the chip inside the key. Perhaps what is going on is that the chip is failing in sending the proper code to the vehicle. Why would this happen? It could be water damage. The chip could be broken. But you can turn to a locksmith for help with this.

Of course, other problems can lead to the ignition not turning. You might end up needing help with an ignition switch. That’s another thing a locksmith can look at for you.

Car Alarm is Problematic

If your transponder key is failing to work as it is supposed to, you might have a problem with the car’s alarm system. The immobilizer must work. This might be a frustration for you to deal with.

Transponder Key Chip Is Damaged or Wet

Like many things, you don’t want your transponder key to get wet. Let’s say the chip became wet – in this case, it could be completely damaged and you might want to consider reaching out to a locksmith for transponder key programming.

There is a Programming Issue

Some might try to program a transponder key without the right parts and tools to do so. You don’t want to skip out on going with a professional for a service like this. Sure, you can find tutorials explaining how to program a transponder key, but you can and very likely are going to come across information that is not necessarily accurate. What problems can occur if you try to program your own transponder key or if you hire a novice? You could end up with codes that do not work. Or the key could become damaged. You could end up wasting your money.

The point is, it’s better to go with an expert to begin with!

Here is something you can try on your own if you believe you have a transponder key problem. If the key seems to not be working but you don’t have a valid reason why (for instance, you know it’s not broken and you know it didn’t get wet), try the battery. Replacing it might solve things for you. If it’s not the battery, maybe it is an engine control unit problem. No matter what, if it does involve your key or your locks, an automotive locksmith should be able to offer the assistance you need. You could drive a Nissan, Mazda, Hyundai, Toyota, Ford, GM, Kia, Lexus, Chrysler BMW, or something else – an expert specializing in locks and keys should also work with all makes and models. How convenient is that?   We are hopeful that the information we have offered in this article on transponder key problems is useful for you. Now, you should have a better idea of what the issue is and how it might be resolved!
